Refurbish ECD centre

2018
A NEW KITCHEN FOR AN EARLY CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTRE IN MONTAGU!

Precious Jewel is an ECDC in Montagu which looks after 54 children (this includes feeding them twice a day) in a functional but rather dilapidated building owned by a church. Its dedicated staff provides care, play opportunities and education appropriate to the ages of their young charges. They are also participants in the Wordworks Home School Parent Partnership programme supported by our club (see our previous Project reports on this website or on our Facebook page).
Our club was asked by the staff if we could help with a kitchen refurbishment, as this room and its equipment were in a very poor state of repair (see first 2 photos) and probably unhygienic. With the aid of a District Grant of R12471, matched with the same amount from club funds, the refurbishment took place over this winter. The grant paid for new kitchen cupboards, new sink with cupboard underneath, a new gas stove, the gas installation (including the wire cage for the cylinders outside, required by law), new Novilon flooring, and an electrical survey.
We are most grateful to Gareth Evans Kitchens for the free installation of the cupboards by his 2 skilled joiners, Henry Rossouw and Tertius Pekeur. Also to local business man, "The Handyman", Deon de Winter, who donated his time to painting and to laying of the floor. The project was overseen by Associate Member Yvette Hanekom. The staff are delighted with their new kitchen and will enjoy using it to provide nourishing meals for the children.
