EXCITING NEW PHASE FOR LANGEBERG WORDWORKS PROJECT

In September an exciting new development was launched in this project, which has now been running for nearly 6 years. From an initial two Early Child Development Centres (ECDCs) in Bonnievale participating in 2013, the programme is now running in 8 ECDCs in Montagu, Ashton, Robertson and Bonnievale.
Three trainers from Wordworks HQ in Cape Town came to Bonnievale to lead a 3 day course in a new programme - to be introduced next year. The course was held in the new building at the Bonniepeople project, which provided an excellent venue for the occasion and we are most grateful to the Bonniepeople Board for this opportunity. There were 25 ECDC practitioner participants as well as the three members of the project’s local training team. We are also most grateful to them for organising the logistics –most importantly the excellent catering to keep everyone well fed and watered and therefore ready to learn!
The new programme is called Every Word Counts –it replaces the previous home school partnership (HSP). Unlike the HSP, it is specifically designed to be used in ECDCs –both by the practitioners as part of their daily work with the children and also when they work after hours as facilitators in 6 parent teaching sessions, which aim to give parents ideas on how to interact with their children in terms of play, talking, stories, reading and singing, drawing and writing etc.
The participants were very excited about the new programme books and materials and are now going back to their ECDCs to plan using it and to start recruiting parents for 2020. Our training team will be guiding and mentoring them and making plans to recruit new ECDCs next year and, hopefully, beyond.
We thank our generous donors who have made this project possible: the Rotary clubs of Claremont, St Albans, Swansea, and Camberwell (Melbourne, Australia). There have also been generous private donors. We thank our own club members for their support. We are grateful to the Boards of Bonniepeople and Kapteintjies ECDCs for assisting with the transport of course participants. We are indebted to Wordworks for their excellent programmes and trainers as well as their support for our local training team. Most important of all –we acknowledge the dedicated practitioners who make up our training team, the ECDC practitioner facilitators and the parents and caregivers.
